Moorcroft Rococo Vase

Rococo, an 18th century Baroque style, was exceptionally ornamental and theatrical with a stylised acanthus leaf (Acanthus mollis) as a signature motif. Here Rachel uses deeply lobed blue acanthus leaves with flower spikes of ostentatious scarlet and cinnamon to create a natural sunburst. The statuesque acanthus stems are pummelled and pulled into ornamentation not unlike the British Rococo woodcarving which emanated from cabinet makers Matthias Lock and Henry Copland in 1742.
