One of the most useful things you can do to help wildlife is to build a garden pond. In February all appears calm in the pond but there is whole world of wildlife in its depths which will soon leap into life. Plant growth is beginning with the shoots of bulrushes or reed mace pushing out of the water early in the year. A slight increase in temperature will signal to hibernating frogs that it is time to wake up and toads will return to a pond to breed as the cycle of new pond life starts again.
