During the 1880s Arts and Crafts designer William De Morgan repeatedly featured carnations in his creations.  His use of a bold colour palette, inspired by Persian art, heralded an era of vibrancy.  Rachel’s fan shaped mauve carnations are set against a rich claret background evoking the sumptuous colours and detailed line work that De Morgan was synonymous with.
