Handmade in fine porcelain, the Irish Dresden ‘Madonna of the Roses’ has cotton net lace dipped in porcelain clay edging around her mantle. Hand-rolled porcelain roses decorate her dress. The legend of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (also known as Elisabeth of Thuringia) one day descended from Wartburg Castle down to the town of Eisenach carrying meat, eggs and bread with her. These items she took from the family’s dining table to distribute to the poor against the wishes of her family. Halfway there she met her husband, who wished to see what she was carrying. He opened her mantle and to his surprise found her carrying a bouquet of roses!
