The origins of Father Christmas in England date back to ancient pre-Christian midwinter festivals where an unnamed pagan figure, robed in a green hooded cloak and wearing a wreath of holly, ivy or mistletoe, would come to lift people's spirits during the bleakest time of year - the colour green synonymous with the arrival of spring in the subsequent months. It was not until the later part of the 19th century that his iconic red suit (often attributed to a certain drinks company's marketing campaign) was adopted. Goviers are proud to launch their first Christmas Character Jug of Santa Claus in his original green coloured coat.
