The half sovereign was introduced in 1544 by King Henry VIII. In 1817 a new version of the half sovereign was created. This included the Pistrucci St. George and Dragon design which is by far the most popular image used on all sovereigns. The half sovereign measures 19.3mm, it has 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold. The 2023 version includes King Charles III, at the time of going to press the Royal Mint have not released an image of the 2023 design though we believe that it will include the St. George and Dragon. King Charles III in line with tradition will be shown facing the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II.
