Linen is a natural fabric produced from the flax plant, which has distinctive purple blue flowers. From prehistory people produced the cloth domestically in Ireland and Irish linen was highly regarded. For many years flax and linen production was an integral part of Irish industry. Growing flax for the linen industry or weaving linen supplemented many an Irish family’s incomes from farming. All the family were involved in the production.
In the 17th and 18th century many Huguenots sought refuge in Ireland to escape religious persecution from France, bringing with them top weaving skills and some of the most advanced looms of the time. This influx of skill and machinery later paired with new advancements in water power created a boom in linen production in Ireland.
Today most of the linen industry has left Ireland with just a small number of producers left, however it is still considered a rich part of Irish History.
