Goviers 1887 Golden Jubilee Queen Victoria Coin Collection

GOSGOLDJUBVICCOIN

£550.00

This collection commemorates Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, marking 50 years of her reign. All coins are made of sterling silver and were struck by the Royal Mint at Tower Hill, London. They feature the distinctive “Jubilee Head” portrait of Queen Victoria, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm, which was issued only between 1887 and 1892. The coins come in a 1945-style presentation case and are graded extra fine.

The 1887 Sixpence is particularly notable. First issued in 1672 and last minted in 1967, the sixpence was only produced with this specific shield design in 1887. It displays a crowned Royal shield within the Garter, with the date split below. The inscription “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE” (“Shame on he who thinks evil of it”) surrounds the design. Measuring 19.41mm in diameter and weighing 3 grams, this coin was withdrawn from circulation shortly after its release, making it rare and highly collectible.

The Threepence coin in the collection was first issued in 1937 and last minted in 1967. It features a crowned denomination dividing the date within an oak wreath, a classic and elegant design.

The One Shilling coin dates back to the mid-1500s and was last issued in 1966. It also features the crowned Royal shield within the Garter with the divided date below. The same inscription, “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE,” encircles the shield, emphasizing royal heritage.

The Florin (Two Shillings) was first issued in 1849 and continued until 1967. This coin’s design features crowned cruciform shields representing England, Scotland, and Ireland, with sceptres bearing national flower emblems in each angle. The date is split above the shields, and the inscription “BRITT: REG: 18 87 FID: DEF:” denotes “Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith.”

Finally, the Half Crown (Two Shillings and Six Pence) was minted from 1549 to 1967. It shows a crowned quartered shield of arms within the garter and collar with a legend around the edge. The reverse depicts St George on horseback slaying the dragon, with the date divided below. The full inscription reads “Britanniarum Regina Fidei Defensatrix” (“Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith”) alongside the well-known motto “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (“Shame on he who thinks evil of it”).
