You would be forgiven for thinking that this rose design, coming in a two-tone orange and yellow rose colourway, was an ultra-modern design and not a design stemming from 19th Century botanical artistry. This design is inspired by a hand-coloured engraving (Plate 120) of Rosa eglanteria 'Lutea' and its bicolor variety, from Henry Cranke Andrews’s ‘Roses: or a Monograph of the Genus Rosa’ Volume 2 (London, 1805-1828).
Against a Mediterranean-blue sky, the rose holds colouration like Seville oranges and Lisbon lemons, sumptuously ripe and ready for squeezing. As petals coil and turn, the displacement between orange and yellow becomes almost surreal, calling you right inside the design to examine the raspberry stems and lush-green, serrated leaves.
Like a copper wheel in a Victorian mantel clock, this design, grows with excitement
in three-dimensional form, as it just keeps on unravelling in colour and form with every turn of the vase for exceptional curiosity.
