Pegasus is the supernatural winged horse of Greek mythology. His good nature and obedient temperament are represented in drawings by a shining white body with raised wings. June Branscombe has captured these dreamy qualities in the first of Govier's New Exclusive Mythical Beasts series. Pegasus rests amongst the clouds of a light blue sky awaiting orders to carry the God Zeus to Mount Olympus, where he is placed among the constellations. June has used a simple but beautiful design of on-glaze white ona pure white body to create stunning raised markings complemented by subtle touches of gilt to the wings, mane, tail and hooves. The use of on-glaze white is unusual in Royal Crown Derby paperweights and is exceptional in its texture and movement. June has pioneered thsi effect on this year's Guild Exclusive, the Snowy Owl. Altogether, June has created a wonderful piece for Govier's as the first of a pair of Mythical Beasts. |
