| Throughout his illustrious naval career, Horatio Nelson earned respect from all sides through his bravery in battle. His first victory at the Battle of St Vincent in 1797 led to the the title of Rear Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson. A year later and the Battle of the Nile was said to have altered history by crippling Napoleon at sea. During the battle, the French ship, L'Orient, exploded, after gunpowder on board was set alight. British ships rescued 70 French sailors. At the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, Nelson put his telescope to his blind eye to ignore a command from his superior. The Danes surrendered and Nelson was once again a hero. In 1805 Trafalgar was Nelson's most famous and last battle. He was hit by a musket ball and died just as victory was declared. |
